Power

With fuel source and geographic diversification underpinned by  long-term contracts, we are delivering renewable power to our customers and sustainable cash flow to our shareholders.

A key focus of our strategy is to reduce our carbon footprint while growing our company. Our focus on growing our renewable power portfolio enables us to do just that. Our run-of-river, biomass and wind power generation assets in operation and under construction and development, provide geographic and fuel source diversification. All our renewable projects are underpinned by long-term off take agreements that will generate sustainable cash flow. The 60-year contracts with BC Hydro for the Northwest Projects will provide sustainable cash flow for generations to come. In Alberta, where we are exposed to spot power prices, we hedge our price exposure, thereby mitigating power price volatility and delivering stable earnings.

AltaGas has 353 MW of base-load coal-fired and 54 MW of gas-fired power generation in Alberta. The gas-fired peaking capacity has quick ramp-up capability and provides revenue from the sale of energy and ancillary services. Our renewable portfolio provides power with wind turbines (102 MW), run-of-river (11.5 MW) and biomass (35 MW) projects. In northwest British Columbia, we also have a 195 MW run-of-river project under construction, and a further 82 MW which will be construction-ready in the next 12 months.

Our power project construction experience includes an in-house engineering and construction management team with a combined $20 billion worth of projects built worldwide.
